Kingpin meaning according to the USA legal definitions is
"A drug kingpin is a person who controls a network of persons involved in the illegal drugs trade and transactions."
The first of the kingpins of President Juan Orlando Hernández. He was the former President of Honduras. President Hernandez made American history. Never has our Justice Department indicted and arrested and put on trial a former president of another country.
A New York District judge approved postponing the start of the jury trial of former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernández for April 24, 2023, because the parties, the prosecution and the defense, asked for more time to prepare the case. for alleged drug trafficking crimes of the former Central American president.
In 2021, the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, headed by prosecutor Damian Williams, filed a Grand Jury indictment against former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, also known as “JOH”, which includes three charges.
Conspiracy to import cocaine, is the first of the charges, which establishes that Hernández is a former member of the Honduran Congress and former president of the aforementioned Central American nation, who between 2004 and 2022 participated in a corrupt and violent drug trafficking conspiracy to facilitate the importation of tons of cocaine into the United States. For this JOH would have received millions of dollars from multiple drug trafficking organizations in Honduras, Mexico and other places, including the former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, Joaquín Guzmán Loera, alias "El Chapo".
The accusation indicates that Juan Orlando Hernández would have used the profits from drug trafficking to enrich himself, finance his political campaigns and commit electoral fraud, specifically in the 2013 and 2017 presidential elections in Honduras. In exchange, JOH protected drug traffickers, including his brother and former deputy of the Honduran National Congress, Juan Antonio Hernández Alvarado, alias "Tony Hernández".
Juan Orlando Hernández provided drug traffickers with sensitive information regarding law enforcement and the military, thereby aiding them in their criminal activities. He also ordered members of the Honduran National Police and military to protect drug shipments in that country, while allowing brutal violence without consequences.
The accusation maintains that JOH abused his position as president of Honduras to operate the country as a narco-state, this in order to enrich himself, obtain and maintain power in a corrupt manner. Likewise, he corrupted the legitimate institutions of Honduras and while publicly presenting himself as an ally of the United States, he helped with his accomplices to turn his country into one of the largest transshipment points in the world for cocaine destined for USA.
